Mio Node Warranty Status

Below you will find a chart showing the ownership of the Mio nodes arranged by the date the warranty has or will expire on the nodes. All of the nodes have/had a three year warranty.

Also please note the cores/node column. The original nodes had 8 cores/node and the current ones 24 cores/node. The performance ratio between the old and new nodes is actually much greater than the core count ratio. It could be up to a factor of 6 or more for some codes. The cost per node has remained more or less fixed over the years, about $5500. Also The power consumption is also nearly constant. Thus the new nodes are offering much more flops/watt and flops/dollar.

As of February 2016 all nodes below compute122 are now out of warranty. Nodes below compute91 have been out of warranty for over a year.

Repair of out of warranty nodes can be several thousand dollars. The HPC group does not have the funds to cover large repair costs. However, the most common part to fail is a power supply which costs about $250. As part of the School's commitment to Mio the HPC group will be willing to cover the cost of minor repairs such as power supplies or memory chips for nodes that are within one year of the warranty expiration date, that is, for nodes that are less than four years old. Nodes that are over four years old that fail need to be retired. We would also like to encourage older node owners to proactively replace nodes.
